Photography in Design and Reproduction Print
With the advance of technology within the photography industry, photographers are now not so dependant on enlargers in order to achieve the perfect print. They have now turned to scanners. Scanners used in digital photography help the photographer scan in their desired print or negative, by converting the light received from either source into digital signals. There are two kinds of scanners that are beneficial to photographers; flatbed and drum type.
Flatbed scanners use a light source, which passes across the print (or negative) to be scanned.
The light reflected is focused via a Charged Couple Device (CCD) that is composed of microscopic photoelectric cells. These cells then convert the light into electric voltage. The voltage is then converted into digital information via an analogue to digital converter chip.
The CCD array scanner is operated via the scanner driver software. This is installed in the host computer.
There are a wide variety of CCD scanners available most of which are A4 although A3 equipment is becoming more and more available. Some scanners have transparency scanning facilities for instance special CCD array film scanners are produced for colour transparency and negative scanning.
