LASIK Correction of Myopia
LASIK (laser assisted in situ keratomileusis), the most commonly performed type of laser surgery, is an effective treatment for a wide range of vision problems. It improves vision and reduces the need for glasses and/or contacts. “Medically, in situ means confined to the site of origin without invasion of neighboring tissues. Kerato is the Greek word for cornea and mileusis means ‘to shape.’” (http://www.lasikinstitute.org/FAQ.html) It obtains this result by permanently changing the shape of the cornea, the clear covering on the front of the eye (Figure 1). The process for correcting myopia (near-sightedness) is quick and painless. The whole surgical procedure only takes approximately twenty minutes. Healing of the cornea begins immediately.
