REPORT ON THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CAREER FIELD
ITS IMPACT AND CHALLENGES
INTRODUCTION
The extraordinary growth of the Information Technology career field, also coined as I.T. for the purposes of this report, in the later 1990’s spawned a unique boost into the technology sector as a whole. One would be very hard pressed to dispute such a claim. Many of the initial necessities within the private and business arenas still demand a place for seasoned and skilled professionals to manage and implement new systems. Unfounded growth potential was soon realized and even other sectors pulled to cross-train personnel into key I.T. positions. Earlier claims following the Y2K theory supported this growth as shown by statements such as the one stated by Drew Bird, “If the Y2K bug scare did nothing else, it served to remind us of just how reliant we have become on technology and the industry that supports it” (Bird 8). Once the very historic technology bubble of the year 2000 burst, the industry and U.S. economy were taken by surprise as a glut of I.T. professionals were laid to rest
