Rhetorical Analysis of

    In the early 1970’s, Ellen Goodman published an essay entitled “The Company Man.” Goodman’s essay is the story of a man named Phil who worked himself to death; she goes into detail about his family not even knowing him. This article appeals to families that are broken up by a workaholic family member, and should be published in areas that are accessible to many business people to show that working yourself so hard is not worth it in the long run. Goodman tries to tell her audience to live life to the fullest, and working yourself to death never really impresses the person you are doing all of the work for. This article is convincing for three reasons: there is efficient use of a story as evidence, a useful appeal of Pathos, and effective organization of the information provided.
