The Best Working Man’s Country
William Moraley’s voyage to the Americas did not yield any fortune nor happiness. Unlike the most famous early colonists, Moraley struggled through five years of hardships only to return back to England with nothing to show for his effort. Even though William Moraley’s colonial experience was not financially beneficial, his personal accounts support the notion that colonial America was the “best poor man’s country.”
William Moraley at times may represent a poor man, but never shows the fortitude to be considered a working man. Moraley dates “all of my misfortunes” back to his fathers death. (Moraley, p.48) William was not pleased with his fathers will, and became even more distressed when his mother remarried again, giving her knew husband control over all her past assets. Displeased, Moraley travels to London in search of his fortune. Moraley attempted to seize his fortune by unsuccessfully harassing his mother for more money with the help of an attorney. After this failed venture, Moraley decided to sign an “Indenture of servitude” and travels to the Americas on the promise that he would work off his debt.
