Lord Of The Flies
“ Jack held up the head and jammed the soft throat down on the pointed stick which peirced through into the mouth,” Golding illustrates vividly. Hard to believe from the quote to think that Jack started out to be a civilized boy just like the rest. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, it tells a story where boys were left stranded on a deserted island due to a horrible plane crash. Throughout the novel, time progresses and they try their best to survive and behave but the trouble of being away from civilization was more powerful than the group of boys. Some characters remained who they were, as others turned to the dark side of change. Golding uses Jack’s evolving character, from orderly boy to brutal savage to prove that man’s character subjects to evil when removed from civilization and not given the amount of power they are in need of.
When Jack first arrived on the island he seemed to fit in just fine with no hint of savagery in him to unleash. Golding states, “Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with shy liking.” This shows who Jack was initially, when first being stranded on the island, seeming to get along with his soon to be rival.
