Is the BCS useful?
The Bowl Championship Series (B.C.S.) was created in 1998 by a group of the larger colleges (College Football Fight Reaches Congress, net). Only teams from the Big 12, Big Ten, Big East, ACC, Pac-10, Conference USA, and the SEC can play in the B.C.S. championship game (Congressional Tongue-lashing, net). The season champions of those leagues are guaranteed at least four of the six spots in the B.C.S. bowl games (College Football Fight Reaches Congress, net) , the other two spots are at large bids (College Football Fight Reaches Congress, net), that means any school can get in those two spots regardless of their conference. The Bowl Championship Series is under contract until after the 2005 season (Congressional Tongue-lashing, net). There are no laws against the B.C.S. but there are many people that are unhappy with the ranking process. Many people are unhappy with the system because the rankings for the top twenty five teams in college football is done by people, where as the voting needs to be done by a computer ranking system (For One, Criticism Doesn’t Compute, net).
