Economic Justice
A dollar, it is but a mere thing in our eye. We hardly notice when a single dollar is missing yet wreak havoc when a five or ten happens to be lost. Yet, 1.2 billion people in our world today live on less than one dollar a day. More than double that statistic, at 2.8 billion people, live on less than two dollars a day (Roche, 2001). That very dollar is their means of living, while for us as Americans; a dollar has hardly any value. Imagine living on one dollar a day, that’s $30 a month, about $360 a year. Now, imagine having a family and living off of $360. In America, the average poverty income for a family of four is, 16,660 dollars (Siddiqi, 2003). Anyone can clearly see that this is a very large gap and has no comparison.
Being a Christian in America, we have two callings to reach out to those who are less fortunate than us, one as Christians and one as Americans. As Christians we are to follow Jesus’ example that has been set before us. In Mark 12:30-31, Jesus clearly states that after loving God, which is our first and utmost important commandment, we are to love our neighbor as ourselves.
