Civil Disobedience
In “Civil Disobedience” Henry David Thoreau addresses the audiences by discussing his main disagreements. Having slavery, our government, the Mexican American War and its Taxation. I agree with Thoreau in being against slavery and the government who takes away peoples freedom by being unjust. I also disagree about the Mexican American War and the taxation that support the War. But Thoreau’s main disagreement is the government who most of the times are unjust.
Thoreau strongly opposes slavery. That is why he refuses to comply with Massachusetts’s civil authority because he thinks everyone should be free. He wasn’t the only one who disagreed about having slaves. He says,
There are thousand who are in opinion opposed to slavery and to the war yet in effect do nothing to put an end to them; who, esteeming themselves children of Washington and Franklin, sit down with their hands in their pockets and say that they know what to do, and do nothing; who even postpone the question of freedom to the question of free trade…. (Thoreau 149)
