Optimization of Code
Modern Computers have evolved from room full of thousands of vaccuum tubes computing at slow
speeds and non existent memory space to compact machines working at high microprocessor speeds and performing
12 trillion calculations per second(IBM RS6000 computer)(1). The modern computer contains high storage space of the
order of 100 Gegabytes and microprocessors as fast as 2 gigahertz (GHz) or two billion cycles per second(Intel
Pentium 4)(2). It is often thought that with such excellent hardware the need of optimizing the code written for
various purposes has vanished. This belief is wrong because although for normal purposes Time and Space optimization
is not a necessity, optimization is still required for applications in many modern and evolving fields such as
robotics(3),defense systems etc.
In computing, optimization modifies a system to improve its efficiency. The system can be a single
computer program, a collection of computers, or even an entire network such as Internet. The process of Optimization of
code comprises of the following steps. F
