Slave Society and the Family Unit

    Slavery in the Americas is a story that cannot be forgotten, yet the tales are hidden in the voices of past generations. Bullwhip Days: the Slaves Remember, a compilation of thousands of slave narratives edited by James Mellon, tries to combat this threat of a disappearing history. Keeping in mind that the stories presented in Bullwhip Days are not necessarily without bias, as each narrative is subject to the partiality of the interviewer and editor, as well as to each interviewee’s reaction to his interviewer, insights can be drawn from this source. Not surprisingly, the brutality of slavery is a subject heavily emphasized in the narratives. Less discussed is how such brutality may have shaped the slave communities. Did the dehumanization of slaves and the perversion of gender roles within the slave communities, two topics touched upon frequently in Bullwhip Days, prevent the formation of true slave familial and societal ties? The dehumanization of slaves affected more than a slave’s interactions with his master; it potentially had far reaching effects within the slave community.
