Most of the violence is start from multigenerational vendetta amongst families. Either some one stole something or said something years ago, and they still hold a grudge today. The latest killings however have a much darker side. "The clandestins, as the secret separatist are known, want a return to the glory days of 1755-1769 when the island enjoyed self-rule under the Corsican national hero, Gen. Pasquale PaoliaE (Range 63). The clandestins try to obtain independence through non-lethal aggression. They range from bombing public building at night and blowing up construction on the beach, to as harmless as repainting road signs from French to Corsican. Recently their activities have digressed into organized crime; they often kill each other in bloody turf battles. However, "they generally avoid violence against civilians and tourist, the clandestins sometimes murder an official, as they did in 1998, when an assailants gunned down the island's prefect(the highest-ranking French official in Corsica)aE( Range 64).
