    Uniforms: A Prevention Method or Not? The right to freedom of speech has long been a key part of the United States democratic system of government. Today parents, educators, and elected officials remain divided over mandating school uniforms to help control violence in America’s public schools. Those of the learning community have the difficult task of deciding whether or not mandatory school uniforms infringe upon the rights of students in public schools, and maintaining social order in these schools as well. Throughout history, uniforms have played a very important role and served several positive functions. Students who wear uniforms are less likely to be judged on their outer appearance and more likely to be seen for their personal qualities. People who support mandatory uniforms and dress codes provide a number of reasons for their view. Supporters say encouraging students to wear uniforms can promote peer acceptance as well as school support and pride. Many believe that uniforms instill discipline, lead to better respect for teachers, promote group spirit, and maintain academic standard.
