The basis of metaphor is the act of being able to find similarities is dissimilar things. Although metaphor is quite often used in everyday speech and writing, the best place to find some truly original metaphor is in the literary arts which have formed the roots of metaphor, poetry and subsequently music. In the world today many, especially those well versed in formal english, may find hip hop or rap music to simply be a drivel of unintelligible vulgar slang. Though it is true that many hip hop lyrics are slang it is also true that much of our commonly spoken language is slang and sometimes vulgar, hence allowing us to see that there is a difference between descriptive and prescriptive language. 50 Cent is a rap artist who may be extremely controversial, but also puts an enormous amount of deep and subliminal meaning into his lyrics. The basis of this paper will be an analysis of 50’s newest album entitled “Get Rich Or Die Tryin”. Although our class’ assignment was to choose one piece of literature to analyze, I found that this entire album was so drenched in metaphor that it would be more adequate to analyze the best metaphors from selected songs rather than analyzing one single track.
