Popular movies of 1999 and economic prosperity
During the course of 1999, there were three movies released which all bear a certain striking similarity. All of these films portrayed an average guy as the main character. This character was sick of his job, his family, or how he was treated by, what he perceives, as the rest of society. He’s so fed up with this that he adopts an absurd, over-the-top method of dealing with his so called problems and during the climax of each film is faced with utter tragedy as a result of his reactions to these problems. These three films are “Office Space”, “American Beauty”, and “Fight Club”.
When viewed superficially and understood based solely on genre and overall plot, there is no real comparison between any of them. Office Space is a comedy about a group of co-workers at a company who are tired of their jobs. The main character is so stressed out that he ends up going to a psychiatrist in order to help him relax. American Beauty is a drama depicting a tragic story of a man’s life, how he deals with the hardships he encounters on a daily basis, and how he attempts to turn his life around.
