Prejudice in the Bible
Prejudice is probably one thing that most people do not think of when they think of the Bible. The usual picture we have in our minds is one of God creating a perfect world and then we humans messing it up. From that point on it is one screw up after another on our part while God devotes all his time to developing different methods with which to try to save us. However, although we sin and shame ourselves in God’s eyes, there are those that, in some humans’ eyes are even lower then us. There are those that some believe have no chance of obtaining heaven and there are those whom are thought to be so unclean that it is unsafe to be anywhere near them. It is in situations like this in the Bible that we get our examples of prejudice, and although it may be somewhat surprising, there are many, many examples of prejudice throughout the Bible.
The first and most obvious example of prejudice in the Bible would be the contempt that Jews feel toward Gentiles and the unjust ways in which Jews treated Gentiles. Most generally, Gentiles in the Bible are defined as “neither Jews nor Christians” (Gigot).
