Critical Review Essay:
Saving Private Ryan
In 1998 Stephen Spielberg released his new movie, Saving Private Ryan. This was a historical war movie based upon events during WWII. The war known as the “Last Great War” was one of the bloodiest we have ever seen. The movie took place with D-Day, the invasion of Normandy Beach, and other parts of France. This movie has a strong, serious, and dramatic theme. Like any film there were imperfections, but in my opinion, and through my research this was a very accurate film.
The plot of the movie is a mission to retrieve a man. Captain John Miller, who is played by Tom Hanks, is given this mission. Miller is ordered to take his squad behind enemy lines to find and retrieve Private James Ryan played by Matt Damon. He is the youngest of four brothers, but unfortunately he is also the last remaining brother. His three older brothers have split up through out the war and have all been KIA (Killed In Action), within days of one another. Upon hearing this news the United Stated government thought it would be best if he went home to Iowa. With so many complications in the war it was difficult to locate the one soldier. He was giving the 8 men to find and retrieve him.
