Barry Bonds: A Mental Superstar
Barry Bonds is arguably the best hitter ever to play Major League Baseball. He is currently three homeruns behind his godfather Willie Mays, who hit the third most homeruns of all time with 660 (“Hammering”). Barry Bonds, one of the most talented players of his generation, was just following a legendary tradition. He grew up having his dad, Bobby Bonds, and his godfather, Willie Mays; both become talented Major League Baseball Players. Talent can be over emphasized in baseball, or in life. A question could be posed, “Why are some baseball players talented beyond belief, but don’t succeed?” The father of psychology Sigmund Freud, would answer, some baseball players may not have a desire or will to succeed, or lack unconscious motives. There are two parts of the unconscious mind: the id and superego. The id consists of repressed, or hidden, desires or urges. A superego makes a person have guilt and identify a difference between right and wrong. So, in other words, a superego replaces our parents. and if the child has no repressed urges within the unconscious mind, they have the tendency to not have a will or desire to do certain things.
