“Asses the claim that membership of EMU is primarily driven
Introduction
When the European Union (EU), or the European Community as it was called, started in 1957 its goal was to unite the European countries in a strive towards peace (J. McCormic, 1999). The development from community to a union has been a success in most aspects, and peace has been preserved for almost 60 years. But the integration did not stop and has since its start just grown into more and more areas. The unification of Europe has been a slow but steady progress, that now in 2003 has integrated the citizens of Europe in a way that looked impossible when it first started. We have over the years seen the Single European Market (SEM) almost completed its 1340 separate pieces of legislation (J.McCormick , 1999) that has aloud free movement of people, capital, and almost all barriers to trade. The latest big step towards further integration in the EU has been the formation of the European Monetary Union (EMU) and the launch of a single currency , the Euro. This essay will discuss the political and economical factors that a membership in the EMU will raise.
