Cantebury Tales

    The women in Canterbury Tales are evil. They are evil in the sense of using their power to manipulate men and getting what they want. They always tempt and take from men. In the two tales that I read, the woman always comes out on top. They use their desire and sexuality to their own advantage. What I mean by this is; there are obstacles in each of the tales and to get past them the women have to use and deceive others so they can be happy. They not only act in an evil manner but also very selfishly as well. In the Miller’s Tale, the main character is Alison, the eighteen-year-old wife of John, the carpenter. There is no indication that Alison loves or even cares about John in this tale. He is much older than her and she would like to have a younger man as her husband. The next character, Nicholas, is a younger student who is living in John’s home. He makes it clear to Alison that he wants her. At first, she resisted Nicholas because she was afraid of being caught, but later on she conspires with him on a plan. This plan was to fool Old John so Nicholas and Alison could be alone and have sex. At this point, a fourth character comes into the story. His name is Absalon, also another admirer of Alison.
