The men who had fought in the trenches during the First World War were left with feelings of betrayal towards those who did not fight in the war. The army felt they had been undefeated on the battlefield but they had been betrayed by Germany"tms democratic leaders, known as the "November Criminals." (Spielvogel 28) This blaming of those on the home front, called the stab in the back theory, gave Nazis an opportunity to promote Nationalism as a remedy for any future betrayal by a large number of unpatriotic Germans disgracing those truly patriotic Germans. A popular societal belief in Germany was that Jews were especially responsible for Germany"tms loss in the war because the Jewish community had certain members who profited during the Great War. Anti-Semites took this opportunity to accuse the Jews in Germany of "living it up" (notes) on the home front while good German boys were dying on the fields of battle. The popular assertion that German Jews did not do their part in the war was invalidated by a census taken of the German military forces. The German words for the census translate to Jew Count, giving the process a negative connotation. The census found that the amount of Jews in the army was almost exactly proportional to those of other sects in Germany. The public knew that the cens
