Tupac

    An initial reading of “Me and My Girlfriend” may leave the reader believing that Tupac is dependant upon the support of a girlfriend to help him overcome life’s struggles. An initial reader or song listener may not realize that “girlfriend” is a metaphor for a gun. The descriptions about Tupac’s girlfriend are actually a symbolic representation of his feelings for his gun. “Me and My Girlfriend” concludes, by revealing that Tupac depends upon his girlfriend/gun to survive, keep harm from approaching him and live a happy life. The entire song, “Me and My Girlfriend”, is written as a metaphor; there are clues to reveal what the metaphor represents. A man’s relationship with a girl will bring about many different feelings; Tupac compares his relation with a gun to the relationship with his girlfriend. Through comparing a gun to a girlfriend, Tupac uses great imagery to communicate what he feels toward his gun. One has to read the lyrics carefully, or else one may get the misconception that Tupac is talking about a girl: “I love finger f***en you”.
