Erikson's Fifth Stage of Development

    “Should I take a hit off of that cigarette…What if I don’t pass English this semester…Who is God…What do I stand for?” These questions are among many that adolescents face as they begin the search for themselves. The choices they make at this age cement their pathway into adulthood. As they begin to answer these questions, they form their identity. “Identity refers to the organization of the individual’s drives, abilities, beliefs, and history into a consistent image of self. It involves deliberate choices and decisions, particularly about work, values, ideology, and commitments to people and ideas” (Woolfolk, 68). Erik Erikson’s fifth stage of Psychosocial Development addresses the adolescent’s struggle to find their identity. “The person is learning how very complex the world is and begins to develop goals, opinions, attitudes, and many new traits” (HSU, 2). Throughout this paper, Erikson’s fifth stage, also known as the Identity vs. Role Confusion conflict, will be discussed.
