Most of the children express their shock and surprise at the fact that a toy sailboat costs 1,195. However, the narrator, Sylvia, will not admit to everyone that she is bothered by the fact that her kind cannot afford such a luxury. To herself she says, I read it again for myself just in case the group recitation put me in a trance. Same thing. For some reason this pisses me off She then voices her opinion to the group by saying Whod pay all that when you can buy a sailboat set for a quarter at Pops, a tube of glue for a dime, and a ball of string for eight cents It must have a motor and a whole lot else besides. My sailboat cost me about fifty cents(Charters, pg. 94-95). This quote demonstrates a person who is embarrassed at the fact that she is a minority and cannot afford such a thing and at the same time, demonstrates a person uses negativity to cover up her desires. In the creation of a character like Sylvia, Bambara is trying to illustrate racial inequalities and how they are viewed in the eyes of a child.
With the creation of Miss Moore, Bambara is showing us the importance of the wisd

I would also like to point out, that although it is only directly stated once, the feeling of injustice shared between African Americans during the time that the story was written (1972). This next quote, I believe, is the most powerful statement in the whole story because in creating this line, Bambara is completely challenging and poking fun at society and the political blatantness among the unequal treatment of minorities. I think, say Sugar pushing me off her feet like she never done before, cause I whip her ass in a minute, that this is not much of a democracy if you ask me. Equal chance to pursue happiness means and equal crack at the dough, dont it (Charters, pg. 97)
Also in this work, Bambara presents some of the stereotypical ideals associated with black folk. First off, that they are poor. Thirty five dollars and the whole household could go visit Granddaddy Nelson in the countrypoor people have to wake up and demand their share of the pie(Charters, pg.96). Bambara also compares the black folk to the rich white folk when it states, Imagine for a minute what kind of society it is in which some people can spend on a toy what it would cost to feed a family of six or seven (Charters, pg. 97).
The Lesson is a prime illustration of the issues facing Toni Cade Bambara as she was growing up Black and proud in a society that s
