Attributes of a good husband found in Pride and Prejudice
Austen has certain views of a “good” husband that she portrays in Pride and Prejudice. It can be concluded that she believes a worthy man should be handsome, charming, possess manners, be generous, and have wealth. These characteristics are enforced by the descriptions of Wickham, Collins, and Darcy, all of whom Elizabeth has considered marriage with.
Upon first being introduced to Wickham, Elizabeth finds him to be the “perfect” man, the man whom she will judge all others. Wickham is handsome, “his appearance was greatly in his favour; he had all the best part of beauty, a fine countenance, a good figure, and very pleasing address” (61).
