Origin: Curling is a team sport that is played on ice. It originated in the 1500’s on the lakes of Northern Europe. Today curling is an Olympic sport that is played by over 20 countries in Europe, Canada, Asia, Oceania, and the United States.
How it’s played: The object of the game is for two teams of four players to slide 42 pound rocks down the ice and toward the center of the target that is similar to an archery target. The targets are painted on the ice just below the surface, like hockey, to allow the game to be played back and forth. Each player throws two rocks toward the target alternating with your opponent. When rocks are thrown they begin to curl to the target, thus getting the name curling. After all 16 rocks have been thrown, then you can determine the score. Teams score one point for each rock that is close to the center of the target and only one team can score. One key part of curling is called sweeping.
