Jesus & Women
REFLECTION PAPER
JESUS’ ENCOUNTERS WITH WOMEN
Look closely at two gospel stories that feature Jesus’ encounters with women. What do these stories tell you about Jesus? How do they speak to your faith journey?
The gospel stories of Mary Magdalene and the Woman Accused of Adultery are important stories that tell us something about Jesus and his behaviours and attitudes. Having some understandings about the position of women in Jesus’ time and their lack of power and importance within that society renders His treatment of women all the more remarkable and commendable. As William H. Stinson says “…if we are aware of the status of women at the time of Christ, we can see how revolutionary was His way of relating to them.” Jesus’ inclusion of women is a very positive aspect of the stories of His life for me because of my own belief that the position of women today and throughout history should be valued and recognised.
The gospel story of the Woman Accused of Adultery, John 8:2-11, is a story that provides a moral lesson applicable to a wide variety of circumstances and people.
