Death in Hamlet
One of the most important themes involved in the play of Hamlet is the tragic theme of death. “Hamlet is a play filled with death”(Death in Hamlet) seems to be the thoughts of many people who read the historic and world-renowned play by William Shakespeare. Many different factors play in as the cause of death of many of the characters. Each death seems to be unique and caused by the person’s own causes and effects. “Death is an extremely prevalent theme in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet”(Planet Papers).
The first death that appears in Hamlet, even though we the reader do not witness the death directly, is the death of old Hamlet. This death is considered to be probably “the most important death in Hamlet”(Planet Papers) because it sparks a chain reaction of revenge, and death that makes up the plot of the play. The naming of Claudius as king along with the incestuous marriage ignites a fire that burns young Hamlet’s soul. Hamlet believed that he was the rightful successor to his father’s throne. It is not until the ghost of old Hamlet comes to his son to tell him of his murder, that we realize the foul play that is involved in the naming of the new king.
