People speak of “the American dream” and they all have primarily the same type of idea of what that consists of. When asked what they consider to be “the American dream,” they will tell you something like this: working a good job, making pretty good money, has a nice house and a loving family. Throughout the play Death Of A Salesman Miller seems to be commenting on American society and it’s values, showing these values through Willy Loman and his family and how they do or do not exhibit these American values. Miller uses Willy and his sons and his wife to exhibit the ways in which American society has specific gender roles and how this play shows shortcomings in not only those roles but the ‘American dream’ idea as well. Throughout this novel there are things done by the characters that not only exhibit these shortcomings, but also represent them. Gender roles are not well defined in this play, but are present nonetheless through Linda, Willy’s wife, and Willy himself. The sons are not necessarily put into gender roles, but it is kind of an American tradition that many sons are hoped to follow in their father’s footsteps.
