Blurring the lines between reality and fiction

    In the summer of 2002, numerous people reported receiving unmarked tapes containing weird images, with no explanation (Couture, 2002). These tapes were apparently found in mailboxes, office desks, park benches, etc. with no sign of a culprit who may have placed them there (Couture, 2002). Due to the general nature of humans, curiosity tends to get the best of us, and these strange anonymous tapes were viewed. This is exactly what those behind the marketing campaign of Gore Verbinski’s horror film The Ring had hoped to accomplish. The promoting geniuses behind many movies must be fully aware and in tune with the human psyche. Along with these tapes, vague movie posters were plastered in theatres and around towns and cities instructing those interested to go to a website for more information. I was one of those interested. I remember seeing the preview for The Ring that summer and I was so intrigued by the obscure flashing black and white images. But it was the tag line “Before you die, you see the ring” that did it for me. I wanted to see that website!
