To Tree or Not to Tree?
A trend that seems to be growing is the act of deforestation. “The statistics paint
a grim picture. According to the World Resources Institute, more than eighty percent of
the Earth’s natural forests already have been destroyed” (www.nationalgeographic.com 1). In
recent years, the mid-south portion of Tennessee has experienced this devastating trend.
On a global level, everyone is effected. From a tribal member who lives in a tropical rain
forest in Brazil to a local resident of middle Tennessee can be effected. Deforestation’s n
negative effects on the world far outweigh the positive outcomes. The evidence of what
deforestation is, how it effects the world, and the types of deforestation can help describe
a dark picture of the future.
When having a discussion on deforestation, some might not be too familiar with
what his term actually means. “Deforestation is the permanent destruction of indigenous
forests and woodland” (www.botany.uwc l). The use of the land that has been cleared of its
natural forests can have many different applications, but to see a new forest emerge in its
