Similarity of Taoism and Hinduism

    This paper will compare and contrast the ideal goals of life and existence in the practice of Taoism and the religion of Hinduism. To Taoists the true reality is known as Tao, which roughly translates as “way” or “path.” In the writing of Blakney, Tao is “a road, a path, the way by which people travel, the way of nature and finally the Way of ultimate Reality” (In Lao Tzu 37). Also the Taoist script known as the “Tao Te Ching” states that the Tao is “from which all things come” (Lao Tzu 56). This script also emphasizes that the Tao cannot be explained in words, “nameless indeed is the source of creation” (53). In retrospective Hinduism, true reality is described as Brahman. Much like the Tao, Brahman is thought to be the source of all living things on earth, in our world. Stated in the Hindu text known as the “Bhagavad-Gita”, “the creative energy of Brahman is that which causes all existences to come into being” (Song of God 74). Also Brahman, much like Tao, is regarded to be unnamable, in the “Bhagavad-Gita”, it is thought that the form of Brahman that is inside each person (called the Atman) “cannot be manifested to the senses, or thought about by the mind” (38).
