Lake County
Lake County, Indiana
Lake County was organized in January of 1837 and became effective as a county in February of the same year. The original county seat was placed in Crown Point at the Lake Court House in 1837 and stayed there until its move to Liverpool in 1839. After the short stay in Liverpool, the court house was moved again a little over a year later back to its original home where it remains to date in Crown Point.
The so-called founding father of Lake County was a man by the name of Solon Robinson who at a later date was dubbed “King of the Squatters”. This name came about after he defended the claims of his neighbors against speculators. Robinson and his family moved to what is now Lake County, in 1834 from Connecticut. After building their home, the Robinson family soon began constructing a log building that served as the courthouse and community church.
Lake County is located just off the southern tip of Lake Michigan and covers an area of 497 square miles. Lake County is made up of the all or portions of Townships thirty-one through thirty-eight and Ranges seven through 10; all of which are referenced to the First Principal Meridian.
