I have chosen to take La Amortajada by María Luisa Bombal because I feel that it best illustrates the role of a narrator in the set texts read. The story is narrated by an unknown narrator who appears to be the woman who is dead, Ana María. She is neither alive nor dead in the terms we have come to define ‘death’. That is to say that she is able to narrate the story and has feelings and thoughts whilst at the same time not being able to have any physical impact on the story. She is a thinking woman and in the main, the novel is based on a series of reflections. By examining the language used, I will show how the narrator plays both an interesting and important role in this novel.
