Existence of Social Classes in Jamestown

    The novel, "In Sunlight in a Beautiful Garden" by Kathleen Cambor is set in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1889. During this time there was a struggle between two social groups. These groups consisted of the "owners" and the "workers" in the town. As in several communities, various classes want different things. In most situations the wealthier group is favored due to the fact that they have money. Money brings power and even allows one to get away with a lot. In this book, a flood tragedy costs many people their lives. This overflow was a result of the South Fork Dam bursting. The dam was built for a gentleman’s club attended by some of the wealthiest men. The "workers" were often employed in factories and steal mills. They were hardworking citizens who often contributed to their town. Frank Fallon worked at a steal mill since he was a young boy. He, like most of the workers, takes his job seriously.
