Theme on Cat on A Hot Tin Roof
There are many themes in the story Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams. The theme I’m going to be focusing on is the truth vs. mendacity. Big Daddy in some of the versions of Cat On A Hat Tin Roof says Mendacity is "having to pretend stuff you don’t think or feel or have any idea of” Through out the play Big Daddy and Brick use this word “mendacity”. Mendacity is all over this big house or plantation, whether it’s about Big Daddy’s illness or Bricks drinking problem or no love between brothers or sons and fathers or wives and husbands but its all lied about.
The first example of truth vs. mendacity is between Brick and Big daddy. Big Daddy has cancer and everyone in the house knows he has cancer and knows he is going to pass away but no one says anything. Except Brick when they were fighting and in the heat of the moment Brick sprays it out. Now everyone kept quite about Big Daddy’s illness the doctor even lied to him because he wanted to soften the blow before he told him he was going to die.
