Mapp v. ohio

    Ms. Dollree Mapp was a resident of the state of Ohio. The police came to her door accusing her of bedding a wanted criminal. Map called her attorney and demanded the police to show her their warrant. The police didn’t have a warrant so Mapp did not let them in. After a while more police officers came and they forcefully entered the house of Mapp. Mapp asked them to show her their warrant. The police waived a piece of paper in front of Mapp. When she tried to take a look at it the police grabbed it from her hand and handcuffed her for belligerent behavior. The police searched her room. They also searched her daughter’s bedroom, the kitchen, dinette, living room, and basement. They could not find the person they were looking for. However, they did find pornographic material in a trunk in her basement. Because of this the police arrested Mapp, since having obscene material was illegal in the state of Ohio. The court found her guilty. In the trial the police could not produce a search warrant. However, Mapp was sentenced 1 to 7 years in prison. Mapp’s attorney appealed to the Supreme Court of Ohio.
