Osteosarcoma
Osteosarcoma
Osteosarcoma is a type of bone cancer that develops in the osteoblast cells that
form the outer covering of bone. It is the second most common type of bone tumor.
It mostly occurs in people ten to twenty five years of age, although it can occur at any
age. Nine hundred new cases of osteosarcoma are reported every year in the United
States. Osteosarcoma occurs nearly twice as often in males as in females. And it is nearly
5% of all childhood cancers.
This disease can originate in any bone. Over half of the tumors occur in the long
bones around the knee. The second most common site is in the arm. It can spread into
nearby tissues, tendons or muscles. It usually spreads to the lungs. It can also spread
