The Move Makes The Man

    The book, The Moves Make the Man, is about an interracial friendship between a black boy named Jerome Foxworthy and Braxton Rivers, the white boy they call Bix. The story is told by Jerome, and he is writing the book himself and telling the story of the friendship while doing so. The title of the book refers to Jerome’s teaching Bix the game of basketball. According to Jerome there must be “fakes” while playing the game to psyche out your opponent. Jerome has a hard time teaching Bix these fakes. These fakes are “the moves,” and what Jerome doesn’t realize is that those moves end up making Bix into someone that no one knows, and Bix ends up running away. Therefore The Moves Make the Man. Jerome was a very confident kid considering he was young and grew up in an area that was predominately white. He never spoke of a father, only his mother and two brothers. He was a very smart boy and an awesome basketball player. Jerome got A’s in every subject. He seemed to be very happy with his life but was stubborn with thinking that “the moves” wouldn’t affect his everyday life off of the basketball court. His mother would try to warn him, but he didn’t listen and learned the hard way. The setting
