Gypsies

    The Disney version is set in France during the 15th century. It begins with a tragic scene of how Quasimodo came under the custody of Judge Frollo. His parents are Romani and are trying to illegally sneak into Paris via boat. (For some reason, even though they are poor and persecuted, every Gypsy in this movie has one gold earring in their ear). They are caught by Frollo and his guards, but Quasimodo’s mother runs away with him in her arms. She makes it to the steps of the cathedral and pleads sanctuary, but the door does not open and she is killed by Frollo. Frollo was in the process of exterminating Quasimodo, after discovering that he was deformed, but the archbishop advises him to take the baby and raise him, or he will suffer the wrath of God. Frollo is pretty frightened by this, the pious man that he is, and agrees to take care of Quasimodo and made him the bell ringer in the cathedral. The movie then jumps about 20 years in the future during the Festival of Fools. Quasimodo is all grown up with red hair and pale skin.
