A practical guide for history and ethnography can be found in the readings of Geertz, Limerick and Wideman. These authors’ writings provide a useful guide to the ways of the past. Geertz shows the reader the Balinese culture, events and the everyday lifestyles of the people. Limerick talks about the Indians, the whites and the wars that took place between them. Wideman writes about others and about the past trying to understand the story of his brother Robby, his family, and their neighborhood. Their writing methods vary, Geertz takes a look at the Balinese culture from the outside looking in, Limerick takes history and tries to find themes for wars, and Wideman displays the culture from the inside looking out.
Geertz is an anthropologist who incorporates a story as an anecdote to introduce his topic for the selection. The essay Deep Play: Notes on the Balinese Cockfight, is an essay that not only showed what the author knew about his subject, but what he knew about the methods and procedures that gave him access to his subject.
