This Is Our House
Is the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) a sign of the women’s
feminist movement attempting to establish its place in the traditional American family
or has it become an open forum for the gay community? Since the WNBA’s inception
in 1997, controversy has loomed over this blossoming league. The WNBA has
struggled to identify itself not only in the male dominated world of professional sports,
but also to define its role in the community. In an era where professional athletes are
more recognizable than most members of Congress, one cannot help but to question the
influence professional sports have on society’s sense of family values. Both sides of the fence on this issue have staked their claim to the fourteen teams currently in the league, and each strongly believe that they are right.
