Grace
What’s so amazing about Grace?
In Yancey’s book, What’s Amazing about Grace?, he explains the many facets of grace, and human understanding of this gift. This book, combined with scripture, and my personal thoughts can look deeper into the answer of the question regarding grace. Grace can best be understood through several definitions: Grace is a gift from God, grace cost nothing to the receiver but everything to the giver, grace is available to all, grace is only available through the church, and grace is the only answer to a world of ungrace. Through a closer look at each of these statements, one begins to understand the amazement of this concept of grace.
Grace is a gift form God. God gives us grace as a free gift, when many times we deserve the opposite. Because grace is a gift, there is nothing that we as humans can do to earn the grace of God. “Grace does not depend on what we have done for God, but rather what God has done from us” (Yancey 1997). The good thing is that it is not earned, nor is it based on merit. God loves us so much that in response to our repentance of sins, he offers us grace, even though we do not deserve it.
