Exegesis of Jn 6:1-15, 26-34
This study of the verses 1-15 and 26-34 of chapter 6 of the Fourth Gospel (Jn 6:1-15, 26-34) explores the significance of the ideas behind both passages, and how they both relate to portray significant messages of the bible. Verses 1-15 is the story of ‘The Feeding of the Five Thousand’, based on one of the miraculous signs Jesus performs in order to make God known to the people. In this passage, Jesus miraculously multiplies a small portion of bread and fish to feed five thousand people. There are several significant teachings that can be expressed by these passages, and according to this Gospel, Jesus uses the symbolism of bread through spiritual and physical satisfaction to achieve the central message that only Jesus can satisfy.
These passages are a part of the book of signs (Jn 1:19 – 12:50) of the Fourth Gospel. This part of the Gospel tells of the great ‘signs’ that Jesus performs (referred to as miracles in other Gospels), as to show that he is truly the son of God (Knowles, 2001, p.507).
