Men are willing to trade things that they had previously held with high value for mere scraps of food. Chaotic charges seem to be ordered death; everyone knew there was a great chance at them being killed, yet had no choice but to charge anyways. The grand purpose of both the charges and the war as a whole was completely not comprehendible to the men in the trenches. They could not believe that the people in charge had any idea of what was actually happening. They only saw the numbers and had calculated a certain amount of death to be acceptable.
Another scene that portrays the low levels of humanity that the men were forced to go into because of their survival instincts was when they guys all went to see their sick friend. The one thing he valued was his nice boots, and de requested that his friends deliver them back to his family when he died. Behind his back, one of his friends stole his boots and ran away. While giving his boots back to his family would be a nice gesture, those boots might save his feet from rotting in the trenches.

The most touching scene in the movie was when Paul killed a man in the field. Unable to get back to his side until nightfall, Paul was forced to sit next to the dead body for the full day. He looked into his wallet and saw pictures of the man and his family. Paul then realized that this man was just like him, a scared man fighting for his life. He talked to the man, apologizing for killing him. He swears that he would not have killed him if given the chance again, but the man was trying to kill Paul, so he acted out of self-defense. This is the first point where anyone has been able to see the dead up close like this, and is really one of the most dramatic scenes we have seen in class at all.
