Night Owls
This paper addresses the culture of a group of people that work throughout the night, restocking shelves so that the community at large can be assured that the items they are looking for are in stock. The setting is one of the busier “Home Depot’s” in Montgomery County. The purpose is to observe a group that typically works a shift outside the normal scheduled 9:00a.m.- 5:00p.m. work day. A typical day for starts for this group between 6p.m. and 9:00 p.m., the building was filled with people shopping, because the store closes at 10:00 p.m. The store was immense and very busy. There were many employees helping the costumers with thoughtful and courteous manors. The store had a 20-+ foot’s tall ceiling and there were shelves throughout the structure with merchandise stacked nearly to the top, a worker stated that, “because the store was coming into their busy season of Christmas, the shelves were stacked nearly full.”
One of the interesting facts stated from the workers was that this particular location did approx. 1.2 million dollars a week and more at their peek time. The floors were concrete and nondescript kept mostly clear of debris for safety reasons, though that rule was not really adhered to after the store
