Horseracing
Horseracing is a sport full of emotions. There are a diverse number of individuals participating in these spectacles. Some of them are placing bets on their choice of a horse; others just there for the mere joy of sport, but most have their hearts on one particular horse to be their winner. These horses have all kinds of names, and people generally go with horse that has a name that represents them the best. Souvenirs are bought at times to remember the races and even toys for the children who dreams of becoming a jockey or have a horse of their own one-day. Horseracing at most times, kills a person’s soul because sometimes the affects of losing can be miserable. In D.H. Lawrence’s “The Rocking Horse Winner”, the author uses symbols such as the rocking horse, the racetrack, and the names of the horses to depict disappointment in the lives of the characters.
In the story, the rocking horse symbolizes Paul’s determination to be lucky. Paul is introduced with the dilemma that his family needs more money to become happier.
