Gods and Genwerals
“History on page can be quite different from what it needs to be onscreen,” states Peter Travers of the Rolling Stones. This statement along with many others only begin to describe the negativity that accompanied the release of Gods and Generals. Director, writer, and producer Ronald Maxwell was educated at New York University College of Arts and Sciences and graduated from NYU School of Arts, Institute of Film. He did films such as Gettysburg, the movie which in which Gods and Generals is a prequel too, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, and Kidco. He is a member of the Directors Guild of America, the Writers Guild of America, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The premier date was on February 10, 2003 in Washington DC and it was released nationwide February 21, 2003. Gods and Generals is a dramatic look back at the Civil War. The film illuminates heroes from both sides of the war while showing the hardships some went through in deciding their allegiance. It also tells the story of the wives and families who were forced to assume responsibility at the home. Most critics agree that Gods and Generals lack a high quality plot, consumes more time then needed, and stirs up mass confusion.
