USA PATRIOT Act
In late 2001, Congress passed a new act. Its name is the USA PATRIOT Act. It stands for Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism. When this act appeared before Congress, it passed without amendment and without even the pretense of debate. The vote only had one opposing viewpoint.
After September 11, 2001, the government was tossing around ideas, which led to this act. The purpose of the act in itself is extremely good for the well-being of America, but its purposes are taking away rights that the constitution promised the people of America. Under the USA PATRIOT Act, the FBI and CIA are able to abridge the established civil liberties, monitor computer usage and library transactions, and jail American citizens indefinitely without counsel and without a charge brought against them. This act is letting the government do what ever they want and completely disregard the Constitution.
