Fortunately for Chaplin, jail would become a place of security from the harsh realities of the outside world. His first stay in the "bigaE house came when he was mistaken for being the leader of a communist party. Chaplin was trying to return a red flag that had fallen from a loading truck, but completely unaware of the large group of protesters marching around the corner behind him. Because he held the red flag, it appeared as though Chaplin was the leader. So off to jail he went. Serving his sentence, and unaware of his ingestion of cocaine hidden in a saltshaker by another inmate, Chaplin turned into a superhero with super powers, and foiled a jailbreak. This brave attempt made for a pretty posh setup in jail, getting his own cell, having the paper each morning, and being buddies with the warden. Chaplin was comfortable with his new residence. He received three square meals a day, had a bed to sleep in, and didn't have to worry about money. Life was good in jail until he was granted a pardon from the warden. Chaplin wasn't excited about this and asked the warden if he could stay a little longer. This unfortunately was a reality that life was so atrocious during the
